Matthäus I Merian
1593 Basel – 1650 Schwalbach
1606–09 Schüler des Kupferstechers Dietrich Meyer in Zürich und des Glasmalers Christof Murer. 1610 in Straßburg, 1614 in Nancy und Paris, 1615 in Basel tätig. Ging 1616 in die Niederlande. Arbeit in Oppenheim für den topografischen Verlag Joh. Dietrich de Bry. Ab 1619 in Basel ansässig, 1620–24 dort mit eigener Werkstatt. Übernahm 1625 die schwiegerväterliche Kunsthandlung in Frankfurt.
