Die im Jahr 1962 u.a. von Ray Johnson ins Leben gerufene Idee der Mail Art besaß, nachdem sie von einigen ostdeutschen Künstlern entdeckt wurde, in der DDR als "provokative Polit-Postkarte" einen besonderen Stellenwert:
