1889 Hilbersdorf b. Chemnitz – 1982 Dresden
Maler, Holzschneider, Grafiker und Zeichner. 1906 Lithografenlehre. 1908–14 an der Dresdner Akademie Meisterschüler von Robert Sterl und Carl Bantzer. Im Ersten Weltkrieg Infanterist an der Westfront. 1919–32 freischaffend in Dresden. Entwicklung vom Spätimpressionismus, über den Expressionismus, zur Neuen Sachlichkeit. 1923–25 Mitglied der KPD. Vorstand der Künstlervereinigung Dresden. Ausstellungen u. a. bei den Dresdner Galerien Emil Richter (1924) und Fides (1931). 1931–32 Mitglied der NSDAP. 1932 Berufung zum Professor. 1933 Eintritt in die SA, dennoch im Dresdner Ableger der Ausstellung "Entartete Kunst" geschmäht. Entfernung seiner Werke aus den deutschen Museen ab 1937. 1939 Entlassung aus der Professur. Ausbombung bei den Luftangriffen auf Dresden 1945. 1946–49 Professor für Malerei und Graphik an der Akademie der Bildenden Künste Dresden. Nach der erzwungenen Entlassung freischaffend tätig als unbequemer Außenseiter mit zahlreichen Ausstellungen im Ausland.
