Architekt, Maler, Bühnenbildner. 1889–94 Hochbau-Studium an der Technischen Hochschule Charlottenburg. Ab 1899 Bauasseor im Ministerium der öffentlichen Arbeit Preußen. Ab 1903 Direktor der Königlichen Kunst- und Kunstgewerbeschule Berlin. Ab 1916 Stadtbaurat in Dresden. Ab 1919 Vorsitzender des Deutschen Werkbundes. Ab 1921 wieder in Berlin tätig, dort Leitung des Meisterateliers für Architektur an der Akademie der Künste. Ab 1923 Professor an der Technischen Hochschule Berlin. Ab 1926 Vorstandsmitglied im Bund Deutscher Architekten. 1933 für wenige Monate Direktor der Vereinigten Staatschulen für Freie und Angewandte Kunst, Berlin.
