Bildnismaler des Frühbarock, tätig in Antwerpen, Köln und Augsburg sowie im italienischen Raum. Schüler des Cornelis Floris. Heirat mit Paschasia Brueghel, der Tochter des Jan Brueghel d. Ä. Ihr Sohn Jan Kessel d.Ä. sollte unter anderem für seine Insektenstudien bekannt werden.
