Zunächst Porzellanmaler bei Christian Matthias Adler, nahm dann ab ca. 1829 ein Studium an der Münchner Akademie auf, Ausbildung zum Landschafts- und Tiermaler, darüber hinaus auch Hinwendung zu Tierplastiken. 1840–41 Studienreise nach Italien, früh zahlreiche Ausstellungen.
