Rogier Van der Weyden
1399 Tournai – 1464 Brüssel
Geboren als Rogier de la Pasture. Wichtiger Vertreter der Altniederländischen Malerei. 1426 Heirat mit Elisabeth Goffaert. Ab 1427 Lehre bei Robert Campins und Mitarbeit in dessen Werkstatt. Ab 1432 Meister der Tournaiser Malerzunft, künstlerisch anspruchsvolle Auftragsarbeiten. Ab 1435 in Brüssel ansässig und als dortiger Stadtmaler mit eigener Werkstatt tätig. Zudem weitere Auftragsarbeiten für das reiche Bürgertum und den burgundischen Hof. Um 1455 Entstehung des Columa-Altars. 1450 Pilgerreise nach Rom. Unterstützung religiöser Institutionen. Nach seinem Tod wird die Werkstatt durch seinen Sohn Pierre van der Weyden weitergeführt.

Oil painting on oakpanel. Unsigned. To the reverse with an old wax seal, an annotation "17 P/A 2/4" in black pencil as well as the stamp of the Pilrgrimage church Maria Elend, Rosenthal, Carinthia. Framed.
Panel with unpainted margins on all sides, planed smoth to the reverse, the margins slightly bevelled. Paint fragile in fine sections and with losses of colour. With overpainting in the area of the cloak, the headscarf, the child's cloth, in the contour areas of Mary's hands and the child's legs. In the background, probably a black underlay to the original blue colouring of the brocade decoration. The lateral margins with marks from an old overlay (approx. 1.8 cm on each side). The entire surfache with a reddish-orange, browned varnish.
