Schüler seines Vaters Christian Georg Schütz (1718–91). Er war wie sein Vater auf Vedutenmalerei spezialisiert. Lebte seit 1777 bei seinem Gönner, dem Baseler Fabrikanten Gedeon Burckhardt. Bereiste die Schweiz und Oberitalien. Seine Werke befinden sich in den Museen von Bern, Frankfurt, Koblenz, Berlin, Weimar u.a.
