Als Sohn des Buchbinders Moritz Gelpke (*1849 Eilenburg) und der Anna Diethe (*1855 Dresden) wurde Heinrich Richard Martin Gelpke 1892 in Dresden geboren. Er besuchte die Annenschule und das Realgymnasium Dresden, welches er 1911 mit der Matur abschloss. Im 1. Weltkrieg war er Leutnant des 108. Regiments.
