1884 Böhmisch Kamnitz – 1962 Dresden-Loschwitz
Zunächst Ausbildung beim Vetter und Tiermaler Emanuel Hegenbarth. 1909–15 Studium an der Kunstakademie Dresden bei Carl Bantzer, Oskar Zwintscher und Gotthardt Kuehl, dessen Meisterschüler. 1916–19 Aufenthalt in Prag, Mitbegründer der Prager Secession. Ab 1919 freischaffend in Dresden tätig und Mitglied der Dresdner Künstlervereinigung. Ab 1924 Mitarbeiter an der Zeitschrift 'Jugend', ab 1925 beim 'Simplicissimus'. 1936 als "entartet" diffamiert, ein Jahr später wurden zwölf Arbeiten beschlagnahmt. 1943–45 in Böhmisch-Kamnitz, Verlust eines Teils seines Werkes durch Kriegsfolgen. 1945 wieder in Dresden, 1946 angestellt an der Schule für Werkkunst, 1947–49 Professor an der Hochschule für Bildende Künste Dresden. Hegenbarth fand zu Lebzeiten mit expressiv-kongenialen Illustrationen zu zahlreichen Werken der Weltliteratur auf beiden Seiten des getrennten Deutschlands als einer der bedeutendsten deutschen Illustratoren Anerkennung.
