Sohn eines Goldschmiedes aus Antwerpen und Schüler von Pieter Lastman, David Colijns, François Venant und Claes Corneliszoon Moeyaert. Seit 1630 Mitglied der Malergilde (Lukasgilde) zu Amsterdam. Er hatte sich bei Rembrandt gebildet, in dessen Weise er Porträts und Historienbilder malte.

Edmund Tschaplowitz um 1845 Ohrdruf – nach 1918 Dresden

Oil on canvas. Von Kopistenhand signiert und datiert "E. Tschaplowitz 1916" u.re. In einer einfachen Holzleiste gerahmt.

Zur Vorlage vgl. Salomon Koninck "Der Eremit", Öl auf Leinwand, 121 x 93,5 cm, 1643, Staatliche Kunstsammlungen Dresden, Gemäldegalerie Alte Meister, Gal.-Nr. 1589.

Bildträger mit Riss (9 cm) u.re., gekittet und retuschiert sowie ein weiterer, kleiner, geschlossener Riss o.li. Kleine Kratzer mit winzigem Malschicht-Verlust über der re. Seite des Buches. Weitere, punktuelle Retuschen. Malschicht mit Fliegenschmutz.
