Johannes Spilberg

Deutsch-niederländischer Hofmaler des Pfalzgrafen Wolfgang Wilhelm, des Kurfürsten Philipp Wilhelm und des Kurprinzen Johann Wilhelm von der Pfalz.
Sohn einer Hofmalerfamilie. Erste Malausbildung bei seinem Vater. 1640 Beginn einer Lehre bei Peter Paul Rubens in Antwerpen, nach dem Tod Rubens' im selben Jahr Lehre bei Govaert Flinck in Amsterdam. 1650 Auftrag des Amsterdamer Magistrats, eine Schützengesellschaft zu malen. Zu Beginn der 1650er Jahre Ruf des Herzogs Wolfgang Wilhelm als Hofmaler nach Düsseldorf, jedoch bereits 1653 Rückkehr nach Amsterdam. 1661 erneute Berufung als Hofmaler nach Düsseldorf, wo er bis zu seinem Tod blieb.

Oil on canvas. Unsigned. To the reverse inscribed by another hand with blue pencil "D 954 Jung-Poppe, Bremen" li., "D" and "K 1628". Framed in a partly gilted frame with a number "A 9222/2" on it.
Provenance: from the estate of the painter E. A. Donadini, Dresden-Radebeul.
Canvas with an old doubling. The original tension edges partly with tears. Doubling to the tension edges partly detached. Paint with to retouches to the upper right egde as well as below the collar.
