"The ten extremely large format prints of the series "Shika
...
shashin kyô" portray eight Chinese and Japanese poets. The figures are presented in the context of their main literary works or particular biographical events. The series is unquestionably one of Hokusai's masterpieces, not least because of the daring compositions in such a difficult format, but also because of the colourfulness and intensity of the figures' expressions. Stylistically, the figures and landscape suggest a period of origin from 1830 onwards, which would also correspond to the generous use of 'berorin', Prussian blue."(quoted from: Gian Carlo Calza: Hokusai. Berlin, 2006. p. 484).
