Konrad von Kardorff
1877 Nieder-Wabnitz (Kreis Oels) – 1945 Berlin
Sohn des Politikers Wilhelm von Kardorff. 1894–97 Studium an der Münchner Kunstakademie. Mitglied der ungarischen Künstlergruppe in Nagybánya. 1898 Besuch der Académie Julian in Paris, 1900 zurück in München. Ab 1901 selbständig in Berlin. Aufenthalte in Italien und Holland. Ab 1920 Leiter einer Malklasse an der Breslauer Kunstakademie. 1927 Berufung an die Staatliche Schule für Kunsterziehung in Berlin. Fast sein gesamtes Lebenswerk fiel den Bomben im Zweiten Weltkrieg zum Opfer.

Oil on canvas. Signed "K. v. Kardorff" and (illegibly) dated. Verso with remains of an old paper label, old artist's inscription in ink, titled "[...] in Travemünde" and numbered "1471". The stretcher frame inscribed in biros or lead by another hand. Verso on the canvas with a newspaper clipping from the Deutsche Allgemeine Zeitung of 1945 on the death of the artist.
Probably exhibited at the Ninth Art Exhibition of the Berlin Secession 1904, cat. no. 118.
Painting support partly with small nail holes in the margins, one inconspicuous pressure mark in the area of the tree trunk. Painting layer soiled, with clear early shrinkage craquelure, especially in the right half of the painting as well as at the left edge of the painting in the area of the dark green tones. Yellowed varnish, with a running trace at the lower right.
