Giovanni Battista Piranesi
1720 wohl Mogliano – 1778 Rom
Erster Unterricht bei seinem Onkel, dem Architekten M. Lucchesi. Weitere Ausbildung bei Scalfurotto. Lernte die Perspektive bei dem Kupferstecher Carlo Zucchi. Kam 1740 nach Rom, als Zeichner der Gesandtschaft des Marco Foscarini an Papst Benedict XIV. Lernte bei Giuseppe Vasi, dem ersten Vedutenstecher Roms. Eröffnete 1745 eine eigene Werkstatt, stach eine Folge kleiner, römischer Veduten. Gab ab 1761 seine Werke im eigenen Verlag heraus. Auch als Architekt für Papst Clemens XIII. im Palast in Castel Gandolfo tätig. Sammler antiker Kleinkunst. Stach mehrere Folgen von Altertümern (u.a. Pompeji, Cori, Paestum).
